Apart from a 4-week break for Core Values, we’ll be in Matthew until summer. So the first chapter makes it clear that Mary was a virgin. Matthew seems to go out of his way to make that point. But also that Jesus will save his people from their sins. Because he had no biological earthly father, he did not inherit the curse passed down through the ages. Though fully human, he was not subject to the curse that came upon our race. And having committed no sin himself, he was perfectly set up to be the innocent sacrifice, the Lamb of God, who would unleash a tidal wave of grace! He really did save us from our sins. So the virgin birth is more than a sign of Jesus’ divine nature, it’s also key to the whole rescue plan!
