Tinker's Creek Parents,

For the next few weeks on Wednesday’s we’re going to combine our study on media from last fall and our study on purity from this winter.  There are a plethora of TV shows that deal with this issue in both positive and negative ways.  I don't have the statistic in front of me, but the amount of time American kids spend in front of the TV is staggering.  As we continue to evaluate the media that surrounds us, we'll add the dynamic of how the media portrays the rolls of men and women as well as many of the stereotypes our students see in these shows everyday.

Tomorrow night we'll show pieces from Everybody Loves Raymond.  The episode I'm going to talk about is called "Standard Deviation" from the first season.  "When Robert gives Ray and Debra an IQ test as part of his assignment for his criminal psychology class, the results incite subtle competition between them. Meanwhile, Robert informs Ray and Debra that they each scored higher than the other on the test so he can get their reactions for an experiment he is conducting for his class project."

If you want to watch this episode, so you can talk to your students about it as well, you can rent them from local movie stores.  (right now I have Kent Blockbusters only copy, sorry) If you’re a fan though, you probably already have this season on DVD.

We’ll change which show we evaluate each week depending on whose teaching.  As usual though everything we bring before the students is previewed ahead of time and we’ll edit anything out that we don’t feel is appropriate, ie violence, language... that sort of thing.

If you have any questions give me a call or shoot me an email.

Thanks,
Kasey Parmelee
